Will the Tenth Doctor play Bilbo Baggins in The Hobbit? Multiple online and mainstream press sources, particularly the UK’s Telegraph, are speculating that Doctor Who star David Tennant has been tapped to portray a younger Bilbo Baggins in Guillermo del Toro’s two-part film adaptation of The Hobbit.

‘Fellowship of the Ring’ to play Radio City Music Hall with live orchestra

On October 9th and 10th, New York City’s Radio City Music Hall will host Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring with music performed live by a complete orchestra. Howard Shore’s entire original score will be performed live, synchronized with the film. Maestro Ludwig Wicki will lead Switzerland’s 21st Century Orchestra, the Collegiate Chorale and the Brooklyn Youth Chorus.

On July 19th, 1954, 55 years ago today, The Fellowship of the Ring, the first volume of The Lord of the Rings, was published in London. The book was published in three volumes (instead of JRR Tolkien’s preferred seven) over the course of more than a year

Tolkien heirs vs. New Line: October trial date confirmed

New details have come to light concerning the lawsuit by the heirs of JRR Tolkien, the late author of The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit, against film production company New Line Cinema. It has been confirmed that the suit will go before a jury in October, and may impact plans by New Line and Time Warner to shoot a two-part adaptation of The Hobbit, now in pre-production in New Zealand.

Part of CS Lewis/JRR Tolkien manuscript found

A professor at Texas State University–San Marcos believes he has discovered all that exists of a book that JRR Tolkien and close friend CS Lewis intended to write together. The book, to be called Language and Human Nature, was scheduled for publication in 1950. But it appears that the only work done on the manuscript was a few opening pages by Lewis…

As our first assault in the new war, I got to try out my patented Pyroclastic Attack. See, we dug so deep at Angband that we hit magma, so I designed a series of sluices that brought the magma up into giant reservoirs. Last night we blew the floodgates, and millions of metric tons of lava, ash and poisonous gas burst out onto Ard-galen, converting what was a hideous plain infested with bright green grasses and sickly white flowers into a beautiful wasteland of basalt and hyaloclastite. Yes!

Why didn’t Frodo just ride an Eagle straight from Rivendell to Mt. Doom, and drop the One Ring into the lava? We know Gandalf was buddy-buddy with some giant Eagles, who rescued him from Orthanc and later snatched Frodo and Sam from certain immolation. If the Eagles can pick up the Hobbits from Mordor, why can’t they take them there as well?

(In Tolkien’s writing, “Man” is gender neutral, and is equivalent to “human.”) The first was Beren the Man and Lúthien Tinúviel; the second Tuor the Man and Idril Celebrindal; the third Elessar Telcontar (better known as Aragorn) and Arwen Undómiel, who marry at the end of The Lord of the Rings.
