  Today in Middle-Earth history: September 22nd (Happy Birthday Bilbo & Frodo!)

  On September 22nd, 2890 TA, Bilbo Baggins was born to Bungo Baggins and Belladonna Baggins (née Took), probably at Bag End.

  Precisely 78 years later, on September 22nd, 2968 TA, Frodo Baggins was born to Drogo Baggins and Primula Baggins (née Brandybuck), probably at Brandy Hall in Buckland.

  Tolkien word of the day: ‘dwarves’

  Tolkien did not invent the word dwarf, but he did invent the plural form dwarves. Some sources give examples of the use of dwarves as far back as 1818, but these uses are mistakes. Tolkien was well aware that the traditional modern plural form of dwarf is dwarfs, but decided to use dwarves anyway.

  Director Guillermo del Toro has confirmed, in an interview with BBC Radio 5, that Sir Ian McKellen will reprise the role of Gandalf in the upcoming two-part film version of The Hobbit. Del Toro also revealed that Hugo Weaving will return as Elrond Half-elven, and Andy Serkis will once again provide the voice and movements for the computer-generated character Gollum.

  Type “pronounce tolkien” into Google, and you’ll find a lively debate on how to pronounce the surname of the beloved author of The Lord of the Rings. There are two main camps. One insists on “tol-kenn.” The other will argue that “Tolkien” is a German name, properly pronounced “Tolk-een.”

  They’re both wrong.

  Why doesn’t Frodo just ride an eagle to Mount Doom?

  Why didn’t Frodo just ride an Eagle straight from Rivendell to Mt. Doom, and drop the One Ring into the lava? We know Gandalf was buddy-buddy with some giant Eagles, who rescued him from Orthanc and later snatched Frodo and Sam from certain immolation. If the Eagles can pick up the Hobbits from Mordor, why can’t they take them there as well?

  A two-part film adaptation of JRR Tolkien’s beloved children’s novel, The Hobbit, is slated for release in December 2011 and December 2012. The films will be directed by Guillermo del Toro, with Peter Jackson acting as executive producer and co-writer.

  Although Tolkien’s fantasy novels are tales told by Hobbits, and tell the adventures of Hobbits, a case can be made that the real protagonist of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings is the wizard Gandalf. Except for Elrond Half-elven, Gandalf is the only character who plays a key part in the events of both those novels and The Silmarillion.
