I agree in the main with your points, but I hope Sir Peter is careful with your last one (pre-addendum). I hope the journey home is kept in. It's the segue between the scenes at the end that I'm worried about. It'd be so easy to treat the final dialogue with Thorin as an end in itself as to jar people quite a bit on the journey home.

I like the idea of Gandalf getting a story arc, but I'm a bit concerned that it might detract from the main story. One of the aspects I loved while reading the book as a child was fairly simple structure to the plot, without a lot of multiple storylines getting in the way. (It helped keep up with the fairy tale feel, imo.) Gandalf getting his own story arc would be brilliant if done well, though could severely disorient the audience if done poorly. I hope Sir Peter tries it, but I have some reservations about it.

I agree. There are many dimwits - I mean, close-minded idividuals - who believe the Hobbit should be a great epic story and that there shouldn't be any whimsical anything. Bad thinking.

I think it's supposed to be two movies about The Hobbit plus a third one about the White Council vs Necromancer of Dol Guldur to link in with LoTR. Or is that old news/rumour already?

@Jan: It was originally going to be two films, one of "The Hobbit" and one "bridge film" between "The Hobbit" and LOTR. But that plan was abandoned (thankfully), and the plan now is for one two-part adaptation of "The Hobbit."

@Robert -- you're right that the Wargs don't sing, but they do talk.

I'm not saying Gimli WAS at the battle. I'm just saying that it's physically possible, given what we know in the canon. (And Jackson isn't necessarily restrained by canon.)

You know, it's a shame that Sir Peter will never read these suggestions. It might save him from a great deal of grief later, for if he doesn't stick to the child-like feel of the Hobbit he very likely will drown in his own sweat, trying to compete with himself to outdo his LOTR epic. As for the second movie, well I have no great hopes for that either, though he'll have more leeway to play around and scotch-tape things together that don't really go.

Singing wolves? Where?
I don't see how Gimli could have been at the Battle, as he was in the Blue Mountains at the time and wasn't allowed to join the Company.
