Much of the editorial focus of JRR Tolkien Examiner will be on the upcoming, two-part film version of The Hobbit, to be released at Christmas 2011 and 2012. The Hobbit Report will bring you the latest developments as the production progresses.

Director Guillermo del Toro has confirmed, in an interview with BBC Radio 5, that Sir Ian McKellen will reprise the role of Gandalf in the upcoming two-part film version of The Hobbit.

Del Toro also revealed that Hugo Weaving will return as Elrond Half-elven, and Andy Serkis will once again provide the voice and movements for the computer-generated character Gollum.

Separately, McKellen made a surprise appearance at the British Film Institute’s marathon screening of the Lord of the Rings trilogy this past Saturday, August 22nd in London. He not only confirmed to the audience that he will be back in New Zealand for the filming of The Hobbit in March 2010, but also that the part of Bilbo Baggins has been cast.

As of last month, the favorite contender for the role of Young Bilbo was Scottish Doctor Who and Harry Potter actor David Tennant.
