Saruman just a "guy", Sauron pretty much a "god". They where both angelic Maiar. When asked by the Ainur to help middle earth they became incarnate. Veiled in flesh they became subject to the travails and weaknesses of a body. they were asked to remain hidden and not use their angelic powers to influence the peoples of middle earth. Gandalf remained true to his set purpose while Saruman, Rhadgast and two other unnamed wizards fell by the wayside.

Hey, Tolkien changed all our lives. Back to S and S, I really don't see Saruman as a well-intentioned hero, but rather as an over-bearing know-it-all who got tangled up in Sauron's web, realized too late he was out-classed and had failed Evil 101, and high-tailed it to the Shire where he could both hide and lord it over the poor hobbits, all at the same time. I'm glad Grima killed him.
Anyway, what about a nice feature on Ungoliant and her delightful offspring? And how about those choice arachnids in Mirkwood?

[...] For the first time, we hear that the book’s Saruman has been renamed “Aruman.” This is because Bakshi assumed the American moviegoing public was so dense, they would not understand the difference between “Saruman” and “Sauron.” As the Peter Jackson trilogy demonstrated, Bakshi was absolutely right.
