But I think you're right. We need someone who can play the repressed, conservative Bilbo at the beginning, who still has this spark of adventure inside of him -- and then portray his slow maturation into the Bilbo of LOTR. Tennant would be great. Unfortunately, it's just a rumor, and if Tennant's US sitcom takes off, he won't be available. Yeah, when someone first suggested Tennant, I thought it was bizarre, even though I’m a huge fan. But I think you’re right. He's funny, clever and wildly crazy. He's the only one on the list who could actually pull it off in the spirit of J.R. R. Tolkien. People say he's too tall, but remember, John Rhys Davies who played Gimli in LOTR, was the tallest member in the cast. They know what they're doing when it comes to proportional believability. Frodo, Bilbo et al, were all normal-sized actors in LOTR. If David Tennant gets cast, he will become Bilbo to us. I can already see him engaging in the riddle game with Gollum under the mountains.
