Original art by fantasy author JRR Tolkien will be on display today only, March 4th, at the Bodleian Library at the University of Oxford, in celebration of World Book Day.
The centerpiece of the exhibit is Tolkien’s original handwritten manuscript for his 1937 children’s novel, The Hobbit, which is illustrated with the author’s own drawings. A rare first edition of the book will also be on display.
Visitors can also see five watercolor illustrations, painted by Tolkien in 1937, that were commissioned by the American publishers for the US edition.
The exhibit is free, and will run 10am-5pm today only. The Bodleian Library is the main research and copyright deposit library of the University of Oxford, located in the City of Oxford, Oxfordshire, United Kingdom.
World Book Day supports books and reading. Libraries, schools and bookshops will be holding a variety of book-related events.
