Oxford Dictionary’s 2009 Word of the Year: ‘Unfriend’

The editors of the New Oxford American Dictionary have chosen “unfriend” as its “2009 Word of the Year,” beating out other Internet-oriented neologisms such as “hashtag,” “netbook,” “paywall” and “sexting.”

Tolkien aficionados may remember the word from The Silmarillion, where it is used twice (once in the form “unfriendship”).

Today in Tolkien History: son Father John Tolkien born in 1917

On November 16th, 1917 John Francis Reuel Tolkien was born to future Lord of the Rings author JRR Tolkien and his wife, Edith Mary Tolkien (née Bratt). He was their first child of four. Father Tolkien passed away in January 2003, while denying allegations that he had sexually assaulted a teenage congregant in the 1960s.

So Carcharoth brought this Gorlim into my dreadful presence — clearly the Orcs, and then Carcharoth, had been pretty rough on the little guy. I was in my “colossal wolf” form, which I wear most of the time now, because it’s scary, I don’t have to wear clothes, and I can poop wherever I want.

John Rhys-Davies, who portrayed Gimli son of Glóin in the Lord of the Rings film trilogy, has turned down an offer to appear in the two-part film adaptation of The Hobbit.

“I’ve already been asked and to be honest with you, I wouldn’t [appear]. I have already completely ruled it out.”

Tolkien conference and fair to be held in Wales

The Festival in the Shire, a conference, exhibition and fair celebrating the works of J.R.R. Tolkien, will be held in Machynlleth, Wales on August 13-15, 2010.

The event will cater to both serious Tolkien fans and the general public by hosting three separate events.

Forbes: Tolkien is 5th richest dead celebrity for 2009

With an estimated $50 million in income to his estate in the last 12 months, Tolkien beat out Peanuts creator Charles Schulz ($35 million); peace chance-giver John Lennon ($15 million); childrens’ author and cartoonist Theodor Seuss Geisel ($15 million); and global warming denier Michael Crichton ($9 million).

HarperCollins has announced its Tolkien Calendar and Tolkien Diary for 2010. Both will feature the theme “landscapes of The Lord of the Rings,” with art by long-time Tolkien artist Ted Nasmith.
