  Although none of the entities involved have issued official press releases, it has become clear that The Sun newspaper’s report yesterday, that actor Tobey Maguire signed to play the titular role in The Hobbit, was false.

  The production situation for Guillermo del Toro’s two-part The Hobbit adaptation has become clearer in the last week, as it appears that various media and online reports relied too much on casual comments made over the last year by del Toro and executive producer Peter Jackson, rather than official announcements by New Line Cinema.

  Tolkien movie fans were dismayed to learn this week that production on the two-part The Hobbit feature film will not begin in March 2010, as was previously announced. Producer Peter Jackson told a German film site that principal photography on the Lord of the Rings prequel will not begin until mid-2010 at the earliest.

  In the wake of information released by a British government agency last week, news media globally have been reporting on the supposed “spy” career of author and philologist JRR Tolkien.

  If it’s hard to imagine the introverted, scholarly Oxford professor traveling the world, assassinating Nazis and bedding beautiful French Resistance fighters between swigs of a martini, shaken – not stirred, you are right to be skeptical.

But now the films are in danger again, as motion picture studio Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer considers declaring bankruptcy.

  A professor at Texas State University–San Marcos believes he has discovered all that exists of a book that JRR Tolkien and close friend CS Lewis intended to write together. The book, to be called Language and Human Nature, was scheduled for publication in 1950. But it appears that the only work done on the manuscript was a few opening pages by Lewis…

  Watch out, Easterlings — Lord of the Rings Online to launch in China

  Shanghai, China’s CDC Games will launch a local version of Turbine’s The Lord of the Rings Online: Shadows of Angmar (aka LOTRO) by the end of the year. LOTRO, a massively multi-player online role-playing game (MMORPG) based on Tolkien’s novel, was launched in North America in April 2007 by the developer, Westwood, Massachusetts-based Turbine. As of February of this year, the game had 300,000 subscribers.
