The production situation for Guillermo del Toro’s two-part The Hobbit adaptation has become clearer in the last week, as it appears that various media and online reports relied too much on casual comments made over the last year by del Toro and executive producer Peter Jackson, rather than official announcements by New Line Cinema.

With an estimated $50 million in income to his estate in the last 12 months, Tolkien beat out Peanuts creator Charles Schulz ($35 million); peace chance-giver John Lennon ($15 million); childrens’ author and cartoonist Theodor Seuss Geisel ($15 million); and global warming denier Michael Crichton ($9 million).

Bilbo Baggins seems to have used his Halfling Improved Evasion feat to dodge another threat to his feature film return. Motion picture studio Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer has, at least temporarily, staved off a bankruptcy that might have derailed plans for the two-part, Peter Jackson-produced adaptation of The Hobbit scheduled to begin production next year.

Leading Lord of the Rings movie blog TheOneRing.net is reporting that a tentative settlement has been reached in the lawsuit between the heirs of author JRR Tolkien and New Line Cinema. The suit threatened to derail production of New Line’s upcoming two part film adaptation of The Hobbit.

New details have come to light concerning the lawsuit by the heirs of JRR Tolkien, the late author of The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit, against film production company New Line Cinema. It has been confirmed that the suit will go before a jury in October, and may impact plans by New Line and Time Warner to shoot a two-part adaptation of The Hobbit, now in pre-production in New Zealand.

At next month’s Electronic Entertainment Expo, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment will debut Lord of the Rings: Aragorn’s Quest, its new youth- and family-oriented Lord of the Rings video game. Aragorn’s Quest is the first Tolkien game to be announced since Electronic Arts lost its franchise license in 2008.
